How to play Snake

Read the aim of Snake, then make your first move. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Look at what changes after your first action.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

Controls

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
