How to play Snakes and Ladders

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Snakes and Ladders. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
